University of Liverpool
A consecutive sample of first time mothers were approached at their 12 week antenatal booking appointment. Mothers who had said they were happy to hear about joining the study were approached when they attended their 20 week scan by study research midwives and asked for consent to participate. A total of 1286 mothers enrolled in the study (68.4% of those approached) between March 2007 and December 2008. Of those, 1014 partners also gave consent to take part. Mothers and partners completed separate interview and questionnaire measures during the 20 weeks scan appointment. They provided written informed consent to be contacted for further follow up, in the third trimester of pregnancy (if eligible for invitation to the intensive sample) and after birth. Partners were asked for consent for questionnaire follow-up at 1 year only.
