Women in the intensive subsample of the study completed multiple domains of assessment including diagnostic and other interviews, questionnaires and a range of filmed observational assessments of mothers and infants were completed (e.g. mother-infant interaction, still-face procedure, laboratory tests of temperament). Some hypothesis driven experimental measures to assess infant development were completed. Physiological data was gathered from infants including cortisol reactivity to a social stressor and vagal tone during a range of control and stress related laboratory procedures.

Observation is conducted in a controlled, artificially created setting. The researcher interacts with the subjects and often plays a role in the situation under observation.
