The survey content focused on educational experiences, attitudes to school and involvement in education, expectations and aspirations, as well as on aspects of young people's lives including risky-, crime- and anti-social behaviours, and health. Wherever possible, interviewers were assigned to the same households they had interviewed at Sweep 2. In total the interview consisted of four modules.
The sample member completed one module - the young person interview, which lasted approximately 20 minutes. Adult interviews were also completed for household information, the main parent interview and individual parent interviews. Unlike at previous sweeps, in households with 2 parents, there was no second parent interview. The main parent answered the individual parent questions on behalf of both parents, these lasted approximately 15 minutes altogether. Of the 13,525 young people issued at sweep 3 the survey reached 12,439 households (92%) in England.
