15,770 households were included at Sweep 1. At Sweep 4, 352 ethnic boost interviews were added, taking the total number of cohort members who had taken part to 16,122. The study population consists of young people who were in Year 9 in English state and independent schools and pupil referral units in February 2004. Cohort members were born between 1st September 1989 and 31st August 1990.
