Health visitors collected information from health records and interviewed mothers at home. They also made assessments of maternal care and home circumstances. Maternal reports of hospital admissions were checked with the hospital records. Topics covered include: accidents, illnesses, circumcision, in patient treatment, sleeping arrangements, habits, welfare centres, nurseries, the mother and what help she received, the husband's occupation and the household. Anthropometry measures were also taken.
