Abstract

School nurses and health visitors interviewed mothers at home about the child's health, school absence, interests and behaviour, and the home and family circumstances. They also assessed the state of the dwelling. School doctors undertook the medical examination and teachers complete the questionnaire about the school and administered the cognitive tests at school. Topics included: accidents, illnesses, hospital admissions and out-patient visits, school clinic visits, absences, schooling, hobbies and outside interests, general health and behaviour, domestic help, occupation of present husband, subsequent pregnancies, the mother's work and the household and dwelling. The tests included the General Ability Test, a Mechanical Reading and Word Comprehension test, an Arithmetic test and a Handwriting test.

At this age a control sample of a third of single births excluded by the original sampling criteria and who had fathers in manual employment (approximately 2,000 cases) were given the same medical examination as the cohort members.
