Abstract

The initial maternity survey was based on all births in England, Scotland and Wales in a single week of 1946. Covering 13,687 cases it looked antenatal (the mother and her work, antenatal care, diet whilst pregnant, maternity benefits, the cost of pregnancy) and postnatal arrangements (how the baby was cared for, the period of confinement and the end of that time, help given around the house and with the care of children). It also collected data on household composition and the occupation of the father. Of these, 5,362 cases continued into the National Survey for Health and Development. These cases are those for whom there is data available within the NSHD.
